General Library Information

The UMC Library is housed in a modern facility in Kiehle Hall. The mission of the UMC Library is to be the major provider of information supporting the educational programs of the campus as well as its research and service needs. The library collection consists of books, journals, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets and audio visual materials. In addition to these traditional library resources, an increasing number of electronic library tools are also available at the UMC Library and online.

Mission Statement of the UMC Library  

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Library exists to support the mission of the University by providing services and materials that meet the informational and lifelong learning needs of all of its’ constituents including  students, faculty, and staff.  In carrying out this mission, the Library is responsive to the University's commitment to the values of equality, accessibility, non-discrimination, tolerance of diversity, and intellectual freedom.  The primary Library objectives are:

  1. To fulfill our land grant mission by serving the wider community through resource sharing with other institutions and outreach to the public.
  2. To provide quality Library services utilizing knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous staff in a comfortable, modern facility.
  3. To provide high-quality materials, both print and digital, that supports the curriculum of UMC.
  4. To assist students, faculty, and staff in identifying, locating, and interpreting (utilizing critical thinking skills) information in various formats.
  5. To educate students to become self-reliant information users, and to assist them in becoming lifelong learners.
  6. To offer services to off-campus students that is comparable to services offered to on-campus students.
  7. To engage in regional, state, and national efforts of Library cooperation, thereby ensuring that students, faculty, and staff have access to information not located locally.

Through Aleph, (the library’s electronic card catalog) and other databases the library subscribes to over 10,000 journals and magazines in electronic format. Access to many other databases is provided by the UMC Library.  These databases are listed on the UMC Databases page.   Users can access the library and its databases remotely, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by dial-up or via the Internet.

Only UMC students with a valid student ID can check out the scanners, digital still cameras, the digital video camera, webcams, floppy drives for the laptop computers and other equipment.

Local community patrons have limited renewal privileges and can not check out reserve materials or equipment.

Renewing Library Materials
Library items may be renewed by linking to Your Account or going to the following webpage:

If you have not renewed online before there are detailed instructions for Renewing Online here.

Items can also be renewed  in person, over the phone (218-281-8399), or via e-mail library umclib@umn.edu. To renew the item, please include the call numbers if it is a book and the name and date if it is a magazine.


Desktop Computers and Printing in the Library

Desktop computers are available for use in the Library. The computers are loaded with various software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Printing from a laser printer is available to students, faculty, and staff in the library at no charge. Other computer hardware available for use in the library includes several types of scanners, multi-media computers, an iMac and a color laser printer.  Students can check out scanners, digital still cameras, digital video cameras, webcams, a podcasting kit, and more.


Internet Connections and LAN
The UMC Library is now using a wireless environment to access the Internet. The Library also has LAN ports available to use.


Library Webcams
There are two Webcams located in the UMC Library. These cameras are located on the First Floor in the Circulation Desk area and in the Library Technology Room.


Document Delivery for Students With Disabilities
Students who are registered with the UMC Office for Students with Disabilities can request library items from the library via the telephone (218-281-8398) or e-mail (kproulx). The library will mail the items to the student.
