Accessing Databases Remotely From the UMC Library
VPN - Virtual Private Network
The best way to access UMC databases remotely (off campus) is to use a piece of software called Virtual Private Network (V.P.N.). The software is part of Windows XP. You just have to customize it to work with the UMC network.
Before activating the software, you must connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as Halstad, Earthlink, etc. and follow the instructions given for customizing VPN.
This process will only have to be done one time and then V.P.N. can be used from anywhere that you connect to the Internet.
If you have questions regarding the installation of V.P.N., please call the UMC Help Desk at 281-8000 or stop in at Kiehle 131.
If you have questions regarding how to use the databases or if you have questions regarding the content of the databases, please call the Library at 218-281-8399 or stop in at the library.
If you are not using Windows XP (and unable to use V.P.N.), you will still be able to use a suite of databases from InfoTrac, Proquest and Ebsco. The links to the databases are listed below. You will be asked for entry codes. Each of the database suites (InfoTrac, ProQuest. and Ebsco) have different passwords. If you do not know them, please ask your instructor or a UMC Librarian.
There are also thousands of electronic books available remotely. To access these use the following instructions. http://library.umcrookston.edu/ebooks.htm
